it wasn’t “some reason”, it was 2D animators being unionized and 3D not being unionized. and the simple truth that capitalism kills art.

I remember when 2D faded out, the reason studios kept giving was “it’s because 2D is a lot more expensive to produce”. I was a child back then so I didn’t think too much about it, assuming it was about the process itself, but as I grew up and learned more about art as an artist, and gained friends who were professional 3D artists themselves, I started to question it. Because 3D is very different from 2D, but it’s definitely not easier or faster to make. Also, both European and Asian studios kept producing 2D animated movies

The answer was unions. The answer wasn’t “this kind of art is cheaper because it’s easier to make”, it was “this kind of art is cheaper because these artists can’t force us to pay them correctly”

every once in a while i can’t help but think about how wild it is that some lesbian was like “I’m so fucking starved for representation that I don’t watch movies unless there’s at least one scene where two women aren’t talking about a man so I can pretend they’re lesbians for five seconds” and then another lesbian put that sentiment as a gag in a comic, and then straight women took it and ran with it as Official Criteria for Feminist Media and then other straight women got offended by it and now straight women just debate the merits of it back and forth forever while still ignoring lesbian representation (and lack thereof) just as much as they always did

I think people have truly lost any ability to be patient with storytelling.

‘I don’t understand this’ They’ll explain it if you wait.

‘I don’t like how this episode left things hanging’ There’s a continuation next week.

‘This character is flat’ Wait for them to be fleshed out.

So many of the complaints I see about shows lately are people being confused by things THAT THE SHOW WANTS YOU TO BE CONFUSED BY THATS THE FUN OF MYSTERY AND FORESHADOWING YOU ABSOLUTE GOBLINS THE MAIN CHARACTER IS ALSO CONFUSED AND THEYRE GONNA DO A BIG REVEAL AND EXPLANATION LATER IF YOU WOULD JUST FUCKING WAIT

“The magic system is never fully explained” yeah that’s how life works. Imagine having a story set in modern day America and the characters have several pages of exposition on combustion engines and telecommunication networks before we get to the plot

you can’t waste your life btw it’s just not something that’s possible to do. your mere existence is already a precious and valuable use of your time. the time you spent becoming who you are now was inherently worthwhile

This pandemic is really proving that government has the means to solve all problems they just choose not to

I studied abroad in London in 2014 and my British Politics professor literally brought in a former homeless woman who had been made not-homeless when, during the 2012 Olympics, she and everyone else were given temporary housing to keep them off the streets. and while some people returned to being homeless afterwards, most people didn’t, because it turns out it’s easier to get a job and be secure if you already have the house thing taken care of.

the government could absolutely fix homelessness today, and it would solve homelessness not just temporarily, but for the long term. but the government chooses not to, not because it’s expensive (it’s more expensive to have homeless people than it is to give them homes), not because it doesn’t work (there are a lot of studies confirming that it does), but because some people think that being poor is a moral failing that can only be solved by shitting on them some more.

It’s because capitalists need the threat of being unhoused to coerce people into working increasingly exploitative jobs. The morality narrative is a justification for the root economic motive.
